The Cognitive Load Scale measures how easily learners understand lesson or instructional content, specifically in relation to instructional design. It is a multidimensional instrument made up of 10 items, which are distributed across three subscales. The framework proposes that intrinsic load (IL) is influenced by task complexity and the learner’s prior knowledge; extraneous load (EL) results from instructional features that do not support learning; and germane load (GL) reflects instructional features that promote learning. Responses are recorded on a 10-point scale.
